The Alhambra is a priceless gallery collection, but instead of displaying masterpieces of famous artists, it displays masterpieces of buildings and gardens of the finest Islamic architecture outside the Arab world. It dates back to the 14th century, when Andalusia was under Islamic rule and was the residence of the numerous Caliphs. The Alhambra was constructed over a small Roman fortifications, which remains have been excavated and they are also on display today at the site. In 1492, after the conclusion of the Christian Reconquista, the Alhambra became the Royal Court of Ferdinand and Isabella and the palaces and the gardens were altered in the Renaissance style.
